Hey I wanted to offer some advice on characters with similar names to make them appear on the article name. In a wiki that I administrate I have various sub-pages and even characters who have same name. I just wanted to help you guys in anyway I can. Here is the code:
I apologize for my lack of activity lately, I've been going through health concerns and trying to take it easy. I'm having surgery on the 12th of this month, and will probably be out of commission for a few weeks. After that though, I should be back to my regular moderation.
Just wanted to inform you so you don't think I'm inactive, thanks!
Hello there. Before asking about the headline above, I just wanted to say that I recently picked up this series after a friend suggested it to me and I'm currently making my way through the 3rd Season and loving every piece of it! :)
On another note, I'm an Admin and Bureaucrat over at the Mahou Tsukai no Yome Wiki and I was wondering if you'd be up for the idea of sharing affiliations between with us?
I apologize if my editing of the Stand Types page caused any issues with however way you guys wanted to present the page.
I didn't realize that there a discussion about this page going on.
Anyways, I thought it would help to included info that was on the Special Stand page that was left out in the current Stand Types page.
I assumed that when MetallicKaiser said that certain classification categories needed to go because of each stand in those categories had explanations on why they were in said category, only the explanations were unnecessary to include and the classification categories themselves were okay to add back in.
Seeing as this is an encyclopedia about JoJo regulated by fans, I'd keep the fan-made classifications as long as they make sense, but if you're trying to make the encyclopedia look like a legit official guide to JoJo, keep only the official terms.
We do try to keep this wiki legit, which is why fan-made terms are extremely hard to moderate. What "makes sense" generally comes down to subjective opinion and that requires us to cherrypick information. One person could present a logical argument, but someone else could easily do the same, and it usually ends up becoming a long-drawn out argument since neither side is technically wrong. This is also why we try to avoid all speculation on the wiki as it results in the same issue.
However, it is true that certain Stand Types are ingrained in the JoJo community. Classifications like "Bound Stand" or "Colony Stand" are universally accepted and seem appropriate to add. If we decide to make an exception just for this page, we'll probably go with what Nabu said and have a group decide some guidelines. I'm not going to make an announcement over it, but anyone else that regularly contributes to the wiki and sees this discussion should be allowed to give their input as well.
@Kaiser, is it possible to contact Eckilsax and Vish so they come to participate to the debate?
As for Stand types I distinguish three main types that are undeniable. Close Range power types, Long Range Remote types, and Automatic Types. I don't know where the Range Irrelevant classification comes from.
These three main Stand types certainly don't include every Stands. For instance Heaven's Door is neither strong nor has a good range, although its ability is strong.
There may be a fourth category of Stands who are close range but also weak physically, and whose strength comes from abilities.
Vish I can contact, Exkilsax im not sure outside the wiki.
I think when it comes to deciding what Stands go into each of those main categories, we need to be 100% confident in them. Stuff that seems ambiguous would be better off not listed. The range irrelevent one I came up with to replace the universal type since I couldnt find any legitimate source on it. There's a sentence in gogo that mentions that range is irrelevent when talking about time related abilities or stands like earth/wind/fire, so I used that.
How would you like to handle the other types like bound?
I don't think "range irrelevant" count as a genuine type. Sure their powers don't have a range, but they themselves have a range. The World and King Crimson for instance are strong and can't go far from their users, and thus should be only in the Close Range category anyway.
Most categories named in "Form Types", like Biological, Tool, Wearable, Phenomenon Stands are somewhat already somewhat classified in the form categories set in Jojoagogo like "humanoid natural Stand".
However the colony Stands category deserves a mention due to its particularities that reflect in battle.
As for special types, I think it's mostly a load of bull because people see patterns everywhere and like to categorize everything in neat boxes.
Uncontrollable is basically automatic Stands. btw Automatic doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be long range. Thoth is automatic as it predicts the future by itself.
Fusion and Evolved shouldn't even deserve a mention. Dead Stands neither, they are all basically automatic ones.
I think some obvious types somehow flew over everyone's head. You could talk about sentient Stands, and Requiem Stands.
I'm unsure of whether we should keep "range irrelevant" or not. What type would Stands like Earth Wind and Fire or Bohemian Rhapsody fit in if we remove it?
Aside from that, I mostly agree with Nabu on what to keep. The form types don't seem necessary besides Colony (especially since Josuke and Okuyasu actually mention Harvest being similar to Bad Company).
I think people may argue on what Stands are considered sentient, but there are obvious ones like Anubis, Echoes ACT3, Cheap Trick, Spice Girl, GER, Foo Fighters, Whitesnake, Dragon's Dream, Paisley Park, etc. We could add it if Kaiser and Eckilsax agree.
I agree we don't need Fusion but we could keep Evolved Stands and just have Requiem as a subcategory of it.
Using those form categories would be fine. We could also just keep phenomenon since it's essentially the "other" category with an official updated name.
Most of the ones you suggested to drop make sense to me, though Evolved Stands just seem appropriate given how much Araki points them out and separates them from other Stands. To that end, treating requiem as a subcategory of Evolved also seems appropriate.
I'd also like to keep Dead stands as a subcategory of automatic stands since it's a name given in the manga.
I don't mind doing away with Range Irrelevent either, but I only added it to point out lack of citation on Time Stands being universal. If we can fit the info in the box elsewhere on the page, that would do.
It seems like Kai and Nabu have things under control here, but I'll just offer my opinion.
I agree that the canon three types need to be kept, along with Bound, Range Irrelevent, Colony, Sentient/Masterless, Automatic, Requiem/Evolved and Dead Stands should all be kept. Fusion can be ditched, but we can re-add it if Araki expands on the concept later in JJL, since Soft & Wet is the only real example of one so far. Dead Stands can also be a subcatogory of Sentient Stands
And I also agree that Dead Stands should be renamed, it's a literal translation of what's in the manga, but sometimes literal doesn't always work best. "Post-mortem Stand" doesn't really work either... How about Posthumous Stand? It literally means "occurring or appearing after the death of the originator".
So, what do we keep, what do we throw away? If I understand correctly we keep:
Short Range Power Type/Long Range type/Automatic type and inside Automatic Type would be posthumous Stand type and Uncontrollable Stand type.
All the types based on appearance should be transferred to the appearance section of the Stand article, except Colony Stands and Tool Stands which we keep here.
Maybe my input isn't needed here, but having sampled colors featured in a small square/rectangle next to each color word would help with articulation (see: Dragon Ball wiki's Color sections of infoboxes, particularly technique articles).
