Anubis, Part 2 (「アヌビス神」その2 "Anubisu-shin" Sono Ni)[1] is the fifty-fifth episode of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime, the twenty-ninth episode of Stardust Crusaders, and the Fifth episode of the Egypt Arc. It covers the last four pages of Chapter 195 through Chapter 198 of the manga.

Summary

Realizing the sword is the Stand Anubis itself, Polnareff tries to defend himself against from Khan, which proves difficult as Anubis has memorized all of Silver Chariot's moves from before. After Polnareff's last-ditch defense fails, Jotaro manages to snap the blade in half using Star Platinum, seemingly stopping Anubis and ending his control of Khan. However, just as Jotaro and Polnareff plan to throw the sword into the Nile, a police officer interferes, causing Polnareff to inadvertently draw the sword and become possessed by Anubis himself. Jotaro struggles to fight against Anubis, who possesses not only Polnareff's speed and Stand abilities, but also knowledge of every move Star Platinum uses against him. Anubis manages to stab Jotaro's stomach with the sword and proceeds to push it in further, but Jotaro uses this opportunity to pin the sword in place while Star Platinum smashes it to pieces. Anubis manages to possess a young boy with the remaining half of the blade and attempts to throw himself at Polnareff, only for Iggy to trip the boy up, resulting in Anubis ending up at the bottom of the Nile. Elsewhere, a girl in a red hood makes her move.

Appearances

Manga/Anime Differences

  • Like the previous episode, some scenes featuring Iggy were added.
  • The fight between Jotaro and Anubis Polnareff is slightly expanded upon with scenes that include, but are not limited to, Star Platinum using Star Finger and Silver Chariot using Armor Takeoff ability.
  • The introduction of the Egyptian people was added to this episode when chronologically in the manga it should have been in the previous one.
  • A scene featuring Mariah walking and commented by two Egyptian people was added.

Commentary

With Toshiyuki Kato at the storyboard and direction, I knew that the episode was in good hands.

The most important part of the episode is of course the fight between Jotaro and Polnareff. I was reminded how formidable the latter could be if he became an enemy.

In the duel scene, the climax is evidently Jotaro being stabbed in the gut by the blade, then breaking it bit by bit at high speed. It's an emblematic passage for me, and it looks rather nice on screen. Also, there's Anubis trying to call to the crabs and fish at the very end. Yasunori Matsumoto's frenzied performance is truly formidable.

The end of the episode is similar to that of Episode 26 as it also makes a transition with the next antagonist by presenting Mariah this time. We've also put here the manga's explanation about the different ethnic groups in Egypt, in particular this "Indian guy who had really nothing to do here". (laughs). I am sure no one in the audience had guessed that we'd go find this kind of seemingly useless scene. It would be forgetting that these details make Jojo's charm.
