We are an "Official Wiki" though right? When people want JoJo information they come here. In that strain shouldn't we be supporting the official releases of the content and their terminology in cases like this? I mean they've been calling it "Hamon Overdrive" since the Stardust Crusaders first release in the U.S back in 2005. That publication has its flaws and censorship for sure, but they never decided to change the name of the so called "Ripple" in later content (And in the JoJonium volumes, where hopefully things will be fixed, I doubt that will be changed).
Furthermore I don't think JoJo is intentionally following a stereotype. It may have been more of an oversight in that first translation. If Stardust Crusaders was the first exposure of JoJo in the U.S. then how would anyone know the origin wasn't Japanese in the first place?
Yeah, in that sense the mistake can be corrected, but at this point many new fans are being brought into the series under the word "Hamon" from their official content (Manga, Subs and Dubs of Anime, Videogames). And when they come here to learn more all they're going to find is "Ripple" which looks far from consistent. I'm not saying "Don't call it Ripple." That's what it is regardless, but this didn't become an issue until "Hamon" was a term that was actually used regularly. Let's face it, "Ripple" was being used on here originally because of fan translated content and there was never a reason to dispute it before, right?
I'm all for making it a point to educate the fandom about the origins of the name and what it arguably should really be called; but I feel THAT is something best left to the main page where the "art form" is described in depth in the event that anyone is actually curious enough about it. I think that "Hamon" should be used in the context of chapter, character and episode descriptions for the sake of consistency in what the fans will be looking for and exposed to by legal means. Basically "Supporting the original release and localization" because that's what's going to help keep JoJo going in English rather than supporting arguably more accurate fan-translations that won't further the series other than some exposure (Which worked a while ago, but I don't this is as prevalent now that all instances of the "Ripple" have been officially adapted).
That's my piece. If you still disagree I have another suggestion that could work as a compromise.
Oh and about an earlier statement: I don't think changing "Ripple" to "Hamon" makes a difference in the formatting of the wiki as a whole or that anything else needs to be changed for the sake of "consistency." I also don't think a majority of fans will be asking, "If you're making it Hamon, then why isn't everything else translated directly?" Because honestly, there's no canon translations to confuse them about it. (Copyrighted name changes aside, those are easy enough to handle I think).
